Murray Whelan movies
Melbourne, Australia

This is my self-portrait from Federation Square.

Federation Square is an architectural wonder that Australians either love or hate. It houses a TV network, a couple of museums, a theatre and some shops.

It was also featured a lot in the Murray Whelan films. On the right (my left) where the green glass is they snapped a promotional photograph for Stiff:

Fed Square is on the opposite side of Southbank, and is across the street from Flinders Street Station. Inside it houses cafes, restaurants, two museums and some shops. At the time I was there they were holding Fashion Week there.

Just up the north bank from Fed Square are the Federation Bells, which we see in The Brush Off.

On the ground floor of Federation Square, along the north bank of the Yarra River, is Zinc. It's not the same as the one in Sydney (I think). This one is much larger and can be reserved for catered parties. This is where they had the opening night party for Cyrano.

Back to the Victorian Arts Centre. I mentioned the Australian Ballet Centre that was used in The Brush-Off. Here's the walkway from the movie:

One one end is the Victorian Arts Centre theatre. On the other is the Ballet Centre. Underneath is Sturt Street, where David had done a staged reading the weekend I was leaving Australia.

The scene between Murray and the police officer on the balcony was also filmed at the Ballet Centre:

The scene in TBO where Murray is chatting with Angelo outside is actually outside the Concert hall:

And, finally, some of the gallery scenes were filmed at the National Gallery of Victoria. Some were shot elsewhere.

The National Gallery is located across from the Botanical Gardens, where the opening scene from The Brush Off took place.
